An electric mountain bike for under 400? Is this too good to be true?

Well. If it is going to fall apart or barely do anything, it is still a waste of 400 dollars, so lets break this  affordable electric mountain bike down!

Jasion EB5 Power

This is not designed to be a high-powered e-bike. It is built for you to do the work and for the bike to support you. If you are looking for something that is going to have you flying around without ever moving a pedal. This is not it. if you are excited to ride the bike, put work in, and have it support you so you can go faster and on longer rides, this is a great cost-effective option. If can drive you around via throttle without pedaling, but the range will likely be around 20 miles. Work with the bike and you can go much further.

Jasion EB5 Handling

Ebike to ebike the handling and feel can vary dramatically. This can lead to uncertainty and wondering if the bike is a good match for you. This e-bike is not that. It is very easy to describe and understand. It rides much like any regular, non-electric mountain bike. E-bikes can be heavy, bulky, have fat-tires, be top heavy, and the power really changes the ride. None of that applies as cornering, control, and overall feel match a typical mountain bike ride. This e-bike is not nearly as heavy as many and the weight is balanced. The tires match other mountain bikes, as do other items like the frame, handlebar, and other features. This creates a very familiar feel with a slight e-bike assist.

Jasion EB5 Comfort

Sort of the same story as our previous topic. It has that mountain bike feel. Posture, handlebar, and seats follow the same format as regular mountain bikes creating that familiar feel. The one point I will emphasize here is that I have tested more expensive options that felt much "cheaper". This means much less comfortable grips on the handlebars, much harder and cheaper seat, and it putting you in position that is less enjoyable after a while. I expected the same of this bike considering the very affordable price, but it was not the case. Parts do not seem overly cheap resulting in a comfortable and enjoyable ride experience.

Jasion EB5 Tires

In my video review, I don't think I talked about the tires much. They are mountain bike tires, so not a fat-tire experience like many e-bikes today. They road well, handled harsh off-roading well, and also managed everything the road experience threw at them. After I completed the video review, my son started riding the bike a lot. Without my knowing, he decided it would be fun to lock up the tires going down the road. The tires quickly started to show cords. While I doubt you plan to do this, my gut says these are solid tires but not made to last a long time. So maybe plan on putting nicer tires on after a bit of use.

Jasion EB5 Braking

As I was testing this bike, I had to remind myself that it is only 400 dollars. Because, being totally honest, the brakes are nothing special. They are not super responsive, hard braking, or scream high-end. But. They do the job. This is not an overly fast bike so you don't really need a high-end braking system. When squeezing both brakes, I felt completely in control and still stopped relatively quickly. I also have to remind myself that I am heavier than most, so it very well may function even better for you. So... not great, but gets the job done.

Jasion EB5 Build Quality

This is an area I figured I would beat this bike up in. Again, at 400 dollars there is no way this can be a quality build, yet, it is for the price. Nothing screams cheap. The frame seems strong and handled my 235 lb. body easily. This includes off-roading in rough conditions. The seat, handlebar, brakes, buttons, and everything still functioned like when I received it. Nothing slips or comes loose.

Did I mention my 10 year old has been riding this bike since I completed the review? We all know kids are not easy on stuff, yet this thing is still working great. Very pleased with the build quality considering the very respectable price of the bike.

Jasion EB5 Tough Condition Handling

Jasion EB5 electric bike is not going to be confused with a premiere mountain e-bike. Just about everything on it is basic or entry-level. The thing is, as long as you understand that, this bike did great! Again, at around 235 lb., going fast, hitting huge bumps, down tree limbs, ruts, mud, and everything else... I always felt in control and was having fun. It is basic and you need to understand that, but if you want to keep some money in your pocket while having a mountain e-bike experience, this does it.

Jasion EB5 Off-Roading Power

For being a lower powered e-bike, it actually did quite well. The throttle can still get you around at slower speeds and manageable conditions. But lets not kid ourselves, this is a bike that expects you to pedal with it. If you want to hit trails and fly around without ever burning a calorie, this is probably not the bike. If you want a bike that you still ride, but helps you to get through thick stuff, inclines, or have the energy to ride longer because of the assist, this is a very solid option.

Jasion EB5 Summary & Final Thoughts

Is the Jasion EB5 For You?

Does this make the Jasion EB5 the best electric bike under $400? Maybe.

If this is your check list:

  • Mountain Bike
  • E-bike assist
  • Still need to pedal and get exercise
  • Modest weight
  • IS AFFORDABLE

Then yes, this bike very well could be for you. Are there better options out there? Absolutely. But be prepared to spend significantly more. I often think of things in terms of value and when you compare what you get to a 400 dollar price tag, this has plenty of value. So, make sure you know what you are looking for, but this has a lot of potential for a very affordable option.
