If you are not familiar with what the Lumen is, let me introduce you really quick. It is a device that you blow through to identify if you are burning most fats, carbs, or somewhere in-between for fuel. It does this via a flow control meter and a CO2 sensor that it uses to identify what your body is using for fuel. You can measure multiple times a day and after certain events to build up an understanding of what is and is not working for your body and have a historical view of results to look at. In addition to this, the app has a lot of additional services including eating tips, meal planning, meal services, and more.
Was the Lumen Accurate?
The main concept of these devices is to learn how the choices you make impact your body's ability to burn fat or carbs and how easily it switches between them. But you are also able to use some common sense to get an idea if the device is accurate. if I ate a bucket of ice cream and then got a 1 showing I was in full fat burn, I would question the device. Same thing if I had a very low carb day it said I was burning primarily carbs. Over my year with Lumen, it feels like it has been rather accurate. Times where I questioned it at first, I thought back and realized some things I did that helped or hurt my results. I really enjoyed these moments as they are a large part of what helped the Lumen investment feel worth it. When I was learning about what does or does not work for me and using that to my advantage. The other factor was fighting for those 1 readings in the morning. If my first reading of the day is a 1, this means I am burning primarily fat, was probably for a decent amount of my sleep, and going forward during the morning I am in a fat burning state as long as I want to maintain it. But, getting that 1 reading in the morning is not easy. I had to really work for it, be very good the day before, and really monitor not only what I ate but when I ate. Not to mention getting exercise to help burn off carb stores. This was highly motivational and also seemed pretty accurate as I only achieve that coveted 1 when I was really good the day before.
Did I Benefit From Using Lumen?
Yes, but I am a person who enjoys data and really investigating what I can do to better reach my health goals. This is what Lumen does and if you would enjoy learning how your daily habits impact you so you can make positive changes, this is a great product. If you want a quick fix where you make a simple change and hope for weight loss, this is not going to be for you. In my case, the app offered a lot of learning opportunities. It offers meal ideas and services to help you consume meals that put you in a much better spot to reach those health goals. If offers ideas based on results on how to reach a better metabolic flexibility (throwing in a higher carb day here and there). You also obviously have all those readings to understand how often you are getting into a fat burn state, if what you are doing is working, where and when you need or could make changes, and then see if those changes are having a positive impact. It is also highly motivational because looking at that bowl of ice cream and knowing it will wreck your Lumen score makes it look a little less tasty.
The Lumen App
So, I have covered what you use the Lumen for and outside of using the Lumen to capture readings, everything is presented in the app. It works very well and is very easy to navigate. Historical trends are very easy to look throw, learn from, and find the exact information you are looking for. Suggestions to optimize your health and changes you might want to consider based off of findings are beneficial but not overwhelming. Overall all, a very easy to use product and app that makes understanding your choices and learning for the future easy. It also didn't feel like work as it made focusing on your health more of a game or positive reinforcement because you got to see actual results showing the impact of your healthy choices.
Would I Purchase the Lumen Again?
I mentioned that I enjoy learning about my health, what is working for me, and what is not. I also enjoy turning weight loss or health goals into more of a game. I find this more motivating and Lumen does exactly this. I better understand what is actually happening related to different foods, portion sizes, when I eat, when and how I exercise, and quality of my sleep. I trend this over time, learn a lot, and have a lot of motivation to improve my Lumen scores. This makes Lumen something that I enjoy very much and yes I would purchase again. That all being said, if these factors do not apply to you or you simply don't think your are in the mindset to really work on and go after your health goals... this might not be right for you at the current time. I never want to see anyone spend money they don't need to. So think long and hard if you are really ready to learn, try new things, and hold yourself accountable.
